Sigma Chess 5.12 is the strongest Macintosh freeware/shareware chess program reviewed in ATPM.

Since Macintosh chess software is my hobby (I own dozens of Macintosh chess programs, and maintain the Macintosh Chess Software Index), I volunteered to write about them. Since that review, Sigma Chess was upgraded, and Vanessa Chess was released. They have games going back to at least the 1800's.ATPM reviewed five chess software programs in the September 1999 issue. Also, keep in mind Kingbase only goes back to the early 1990's, so if you want some more historical games, PGNMentor is where it's at. If you have a game history on one of the online sites, you can download it and play around with the analysis engines on your own games. That's a pretty slick feature, though it would be better if you could run the search across multiple databases at once.

You can even search by position, so if you see a game in a book you can take that position and see if the specific game is in your database.

It does a good job of letting you annotate your games, show and play out alternate lines, insert board layouts, etc, and then you can print that analysis to PDF for posterity, or to share with those who don't have a database app. I'd like it if he improved the search capabilities a bit in the next release, and lichess seems to have leapfrogged everyone in analysis tools presentation layer, but HCE is a pretty solid system overall. Well, kingbase has something like 2M+ games, so I think that could keep you busy for at least 8 hours.

I have the full Deep Hiarcs CE setup, with the opening book subscription and stockfish/komodo/etc plugged into it, plus a pretty extensive collection of databases, and I don't really feel like I'm missing much by playing chess on mac instead of PC. So in short, while there are limited options on the mac, the options that are there are quite good and world class level imho. I don't think that one has a level setting though (I think they introduced that in 11 or so), so that one may be better for analysis than playing.

If you go the database route and want to mess around with engines, you can get the older Komodo 9 engine for free from their site. If you wanted to try out a free database, and download something like Kingbase or PGNmentor games to go with it, you'd have a bunch of historical games to look through as well. In both cases you can plug engines into them and have the engines play each other. I'm not a huge fan of the SCID gui (can't stand it, honestly), but it definitely does work.

If you want a chess database that you can plug engines into, Hiarcs Chess Explorer is your best (and only, really) commercial option, and SCIDvMac is a free option. They seem to have a free demo version though if you want to try that out. Shredder is also still a thing for the Mac, but not sure what it has that would justify paying $50 for. Stockfish is great if you just want to play games, and probably one of the better options for the mac right now.
